Born in 1955 in Riyadh, Dr. Sedairy obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Chemistry from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Washington in 1979. He received his Diploma in Medical Technology at The Cleveland Clinical Education Foundation in 1981. He then attended Columbia University in New York where he obtained his M.A. in Pathology in 1982 and his Doctorate Degree in Pathobiology focusing on tumor immunology in 1987. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Pathology, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, in New York City.
Following his post-doctoral fellowship, Dr. Sedairy was appointed as a Scientist in the Department of Biological and Medical Research, Research Centre, with joint appointment in the Department of Pathology at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre. Dr. Sedairy served as the Deputy Executive Director of the Research Centre for six years (1990-1996) and is presently the Executive Director of the Research Centre and Chairman of the Research Advisory Council.
His research interest is in the area of tumor immunology and transplantation immunology. He has over 150 publications and meeting abstracts. He is a member of the editorial boards of the “Annals of Saudi Medicine,” “Biomedical Research,” and a reviewer for a number of journals.
At the national level, he holds the position of Secretary General of the Board of Trustees of the Prince Salman Center for Disability Research (PSCDR), member of the Biotechnology Committee of the King Abdulaziz Center for Science and Technology in Riyadh, and a member in a number of committees in the area of Medical Science and Technology of the Expert’s Council. On the international arena, he is a member of the Tumour Biology Committee of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC), Geneva, a member of the Governing Council of the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR), Brussels, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research.
He actively participates in international meetings relating to research, in organizing international conferences and workshops, and in formulating collaborative activities both nationally and internationally.
He is credited for the biotechnology industry as an offshoot of the research activities. As a result of his efforts, the Research Centre is actively engaged in partnerships with biomedical companies as part of its business development plan. In addition, he is also credited with the reorganization and expansion of research activities in accordance with a well-developed strategic plan that takes into consideration the need of the institution and the global orientation toward genomic approach to address health problems.
He has been an integral contributor in the establishment of guidelines for medical research in both scientific and ethical aspects. These guidelines are now being adopted at the national level and used by many institutions in the region.
