Nicola Nasser
Professional Journalist
Nicola Nasser was born in 1943 in Birzeit, north of Ramallah in the West Bank of River Jordan, where he completed his high school education. Birzeit is a town of a people known for their learning; early in the twentieth century Birzeit College was established there to develop now into Birzeit University, the oldest and most renowned of Palestinian universities. The town was a center of national struggle to preserve Palestine as a live integral part of its Arab and Islamic nation; Palestinian national leader Abdul-Qader Al-Husseini made it the home of his military HQ. To Birzeit also belongs late poet, Palestinian national leader and Jordanian parliamentarian Kamal Nasser.
Nicola Nasser became a Jordanian national after the west and east banks of River Jordan were politically unified following the Palestinian Nakba in 1948; he was cut off his hometown and family after the Israeli occupation in 1967 and completed his studies at the Damascus University in 1972/73 with a B.A. in English Language and Literature, to start thereafter his working as a translator. Translation led him to journalism.
Since 1982 he has worked as a professional journalist (chief editor, managing editor, editor, reporter, interviewer, media and public relations coordinator, translator, columnist and editorial writer) of Arabic and English print and electronic media in Kuwait, Jordan, UAE and Palestine. As a bilingual Arabic-English translator since 1973 he translated and co-translated several books that were published in Beirut and Amman.
As a journalist he visited most of the Arab countries and several foreign ones to stop in Washington, Moscow, New Delhi and several European capitals.
He was repatriated to his hometown Birzeit in 2000, where he stays now with his family and where he writes his weekly articles in Arabic and English, which are published by several Arab and foreign newspapers and Web sites. He is the editor of the English Web site of the Palestine Media Center, the outlet of the General Secretariat of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
