Pioneer: Thirty thousand USD
Creative: Twenty thousand USD
Talented: Ten thousand USD
The Pioneers (in alphabetical order):
 Prof. Dakhil Hasan Jerew
State: Iraq.
Date of Birth: 1942
Position: Head of the Iraqi Academy of Science
Field of Honor: Electronic Engineering
He received his PhD in electronic engineering in 1972 from Brunel University, England and held several important positions as a President for the University of Basra, the Technology University of Baghdad and the Technical Education Authority. His current position is President of the Iraqi Scientific Academy.
He was the first member of an educational authority in Iraq to get the title of Professor in Iraqi universities in the field of Systems and Control Engineering in 1985. His scientific development has continued ever since, and he published several researches about Systems and Control Engineering (industrial robot and its applications), computer engineering, electronic programming and its various industrial applications (computer linguistics, electronic translation, brain sampling), in addition to many researches related to technological and engineering education and the translation of its relevant terms into Arabic.
He played an efficient role in strengthening the fruitful scientific cooperation among universities, working sectors and the institutions of the society through clear mechanisms that define the rights and obligations of all parties via the consulting offices of universities as well as their research and scientific centers. Thus, he contributed to the resolution of many technical problems encountered by the productive corporations during the embargo imposed on Iraq.
In addition, he largely contributed to the translation into Arabic of university courses in general and of engineering and technological courses in particular. In fact, he wrote and translated 35 scientific books, all in Arabic (except one book in English), 12 of which are related to computer engineering and systems & control. These books are currently taught in Iraqi universities and some Arab universities such as: Automatic Control Engineering and its Applications; Basics of the Electronic Calculator, Logical Design of the Electronic Calculator, Micro-Calculators for Engineers and Scientists, Basics of Logical Design, Measuring Systems and Electrical Appliances, Logical Design & Treatments and others. He also carries out a number of activities in the Arabic Language Department and the Department of Terminology, Publication and Translation in the Scientific Academy where he sets up and verifies terminology in various scientific fields, and organizes specialized seminars and conferences about translation issues. Tireless efforts are currently made to computerize the terminology and publish it on the internet in order to expand the scope of its use, along with a computerized mechanism to enhance the work of the Terminology Department thereby enabling it to keep pace with modern scientific developments and state-of-the-art technologies.
He has played an essential role in promoting the scientific contribution of Basra University notwithstanding the difficult circumstances that were prevailing at that time. In fact, the University was severely bombarded by Iranian artillery during the 8 years of war, and in the second Gulf war, the university was looted on several occasions. Despite all that, the University witnessed a wide scientific growth that included the establishment of scientific faculties and sections as well as research centers and higher education curricula notably the introduction for the first time of PhD courses in the scientific and technical specializations. Throughout the wartime, the courses were never suspended in the university. As for the Technology University, it has witnessed new qualitative and unique studies about leading edge engineering and technology sciences such as: Computer engineering, mechatronics, remote sensing, biochemical engineering, bio-chemical technology, material engineering, communication and aircraft engineering and others, at the level of both primary and higher educations and in spite of the very few resources available at that time due to the full embargo imposed on Iraq. Currently, Dr. Jerew is undertaking the construction and rehabilitation of the Scientific Academy, and is reviving its leading role after it has been swept away by a looting spree following the American occupation of the country.
In the context of the general education, he published many writings mainly: Discussions from Basra University; Days in Memory; The Arab Intellectual and the Contemporary Challenges; University Papers; Cultural Writings; The Technology University…A History of Giving; Engineering, Technology and Future Perspectives; University Studies; and Contemporary University Education….its Trends & Orientations. Currently, he is part of the editing team of many scientific and cultural magazines.
He received a number of scientific awards, the most important of which was the Promoting National Award from the commission for honoring scientists, innovators and intellectuals in 1989. He was also considered as involved by the Law for Scientists’ Care, and he was granted the decoration of science, the badge of science in 2001, and a number of badges and High Orders of Merits for his outstanding scientific achievements.
